Ethnocentrism task
1. On the lines below, write a definition of Ethnocentrism. Find one on the web.
Ethnocentrism
is when individuals believe that they are better than others for
different reasons based on their heritage. Those are related to problems
of both racism and prejudice.
|
2. Read the cartoon. How is Ethnocentrism reflected in the conversation below?
Some
people think that everyone has the same culture as they do, and that
when people has different culture they sure will be freaks and crazy.
That type of people are representing the meaning of Ethnocentrism.
3. Looking at the cartoon characters.
Imagine
them in social situations. What kind of people would (would n’t) they
associate with? What kind of events (movies, shows) would (would n’t)
they prefer to go? Think of other situations.
* Describe Bucky :
Bucky is Ethnocentric person that doesn’t like to know about other culture’s and wouldn’t want to communicate with them.
They would like to stick with people from their same heritage and culture.
He thinks that other people with different culture and not the same as him are freaks.
* Describe the man talking with Bucky. Let’s call him Tom :
Tom
is a boy full of knowledge. He knows that there are different cultures,
and people should respect that by not being racism and prejudice.
4. Drawing Ethnocentrism.
Are Emiratis Ethnocentric?
These are the ways we view the world according to Emirates.
1-Indians are the workers that build and clean our nation.
2-America teaches us the basic fundamentals of our knowledge
nowadays because everything we are
taught today is most likely to be measured to
an American standard.
3-Europe is the other half of our knowledge that is taught
to us from few schools or universities.
4-Japanese are the most manufactures in our life from our
cars to our house accessories.
5-China is where we get all the cheap goods from cloths,
toys and home accessories.

|
A people that
values its privileges above its principles soon loses both.
|
It means that if society feels that they are entitled to things
instead of working for them that they will lose sight that they need to work
to support the system that provides them with these privileges

Martin Luther King Jr.
|
All men are
caught in an inescapable network of mutuality.
|
I think he means that our lives are unavoidably connected with
each other -- like a network of threads that can't really be
untied/unknotted, and that we share a common destiny, whatever it may be

WHO EVER HAS NO PAST HAS NEITHER PRESENT NOR FUTURE
|
Any country
that doesn’t value its past, can’t appreciate its present or future. This
country, thanks to God, has a rich past, does well for now and its expected
future.

Every
individual is a meeting ground for many different allegiances, and sometimes
these loyalties conflict with one another and confront the person who harbors
them with difficult choices.
|
Every person
is unique and must accept that they are others who don’t share the same backgrounds.

Gandhi
|
A nation’s
culture resides in the hearts and souls of its people.

The cultures
isn’t dependent on a nation but its people.

Traditions
deserve to be respected only insofar as they are respectable – that is,
exactly insofar as they themselves respect the fundamental rights of men and
women.
|
Respect
traditions only if they are good for humans.

I have a
dream that four little children will one day live in a nation where they will
not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their
character.

God doesn’t
care about skin color. God cares about freedom for everyone.

My humanity

When you're finally up on the moon, looking back at the earth, all these differences and nationalistic traits are pretty well going to blend and you're going to get a concept that maybe this is really one world and why the hell can't we learn to live together like decent people? |
Looking at
the earth from space, one wonders why we can’t get along decently.

Pablo Casals |
The love of
one’s country is a splendid thing, but why should it stop at the border?
|
Loving your
country is good but why not the entire world

|
This world of
ours... must avoid becoming a community of dreadful fear and hate, and be,
instead, a proud confederation of mutual trust and respect.

If people of
the world can’t get along, nothing will work.

|
Many
countries go to war and then towards reconciliation. The history of mankind
is full of stories of wars between people and states that have come together
after fighting for long. Why can't Arabs be like them?
|
Why can’t
people learn from their mistakes and learn to cooperate

I have a dream, that my four little children will

People should
not be discriminated against but judged by his character

|
For it is
often the way we look at other people that imprisons them within their own
narrowest allegiances. And it is also the way we look at them that may set
them free.
|
We need to
treat people with respect to give them a chance to grow.

Class divided
From what I saw in this video the teacher want to move
racism means in her children’s minds be gives some points and examples about
black people and the ideas and opinions from the people in general about them .
she want to make sure that they understand this problem she move to use the eyes color and
separate to types from this color she use the blue and brown color . At the
first she begging to prefer the blue
eyes by saying they are better than the brown eyes and they will have 5 minutes
more in the rest also they clever than brown eyes in the next week she use the
same style with the brown eyes children from her teaching style she reach her
target to make all children understanding
about the racism and I ignore it . In my opinion am with the teacher and
I like her style teaching for information to reach all students in an
easy way
